Fish Curry (Meen Kulambu)



Fish curry is the most loved dish in south India. My house isn't far behind. both my sons love fish but prefer fish fry ( See Fish Fry recipe in my next post) to the curry.My daughter in laws and my husband love it as much as i do. I started making this curry when one of my sisters prepared it one fine day. And I followed her recipe through.  So here my favorite Fish Curry. this curry can be prepared with any preferred Fish. I used Rohu Fish.                                                                                          




 
Ingredients

Fish___________ 1/2 kg
Onion__________ 1 medium (finely chopped)
Tomatoes________ 3 nos ( finely chopped)
Tamarind juice____ (juice extracted from lemon size tamarind)
Coconut_________ 1/2 cup grated
Salt_____________ to taste
Mustard seeds____ 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds__ 1/2 tsp
Jeera____________ 1/2 tsp
Oil______________ 2-3 tsp
Gingelly oil _______ 1/4 cup


To grind:

Onion-------------------------1 medium (diced)
Green chilies ---------------- 2-3 nos
Jeera-------------------------- 1 1/2 tbsp
Black pepper ---------------- 4-5 nos
Coriander powder -----------1 tbsp
Chilly powder----------------- 1 tbsp
Sambhar powder-------------- 1 1/2 tbsp
Turmeric----------------------- 1/4 tsp
Oil ----------------------------- 1 tbsp


To garnish:

Coriander leaves
Curry leaves


Method:

  In a small pan, fry the "to grind" items. 

 Grind it into a paste adding a little water when cooled and keep it aside. 

 Heat a vessel on medium flame and add oil, followed by mustard seeds, 
 fenugreek seeds, jeera ,curry  leaves.

 Saute it for a few seconds, then add onion and let it fry till its transparent.

 Add turmeric powder,tomatoes. grinded paste. 

Fry it for sometime add tamarind juice and salt. 

Add water for right consistency. Boil the curry and then simmer it for 5 min. 

Now add the ground coconut into the curry.

Let it cook for 2-3 min and add the fish pieces.

Cook the curry till the fish is cooked,then add gingelly oil. It would take approximately 3-4 min. 

Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves and some curry leaves.
